Attendance Policy/Cancelled Classes

Candidates are expected to attend all classes. A trimester (10 week) or semester (15 week) course will be creditable with as many as 2 absences and a 30 session course with as many as 4 absences if these are due to illness or unavoidable conflicts. How to make up for any missed class sessions should be discussed with the instructors of the course.

Instructors are responsible for arranging to cover missed material for any cancelled classes, preferably before the end of the applicable trimester. Instructors are requested to notify the office of the make-up schedule.

Case Reporting

Annual reports of cases in supervision are to be submitted by July 1 of each year. Candidates shall submit an initial, or first, report of a new supervised case within three months of the beginning of supervision. A final report of each supervised case is due within three months of termination of the supervised case. The appropriate report forms are available from the office and can also be printed from the Center website at www.wcpweb.org.

There will be a message recorded on the office answering machine. Should a storm develop unexpectedly in the middle of the night, and there is not a relevant message on the office answering machine, call the Chair (or his or her designate) at the home telephone number. An appropriate message will then be recorded on the office machine.

Keys

Classes (unless otherwise arranged) meet at the Center offices at 4545 42nd St., NW, #209. There is a lockbox on the door which contains the office door key and certain members (faculty or candidate representatives) will be given the combination at the beginning of each semester.

The Center offices are arranged to be dual purpose (classrooms during the evenings/weekends, offices during office hours) and are in constant use. All Candidates must clean up after themselves, including throwing out unused food or drinks left in the fridge.

Recommended Personal Reference Library/PEPWEB

Each candidate is expected to subscribe to the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The structure and functions of the Association are defined in the Bulletin of the American Psychoanalytic Association, which is part of the Journal. Actions of the Council, the Board on Professional Standards, and various committees are published in the Bulletin. The required Standards for the training in psychoanalysis were published in Volume IV, Number 4, October, 1956, of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (revised, 1971). Additional information is available on the Internet at www.apsa.org.

Upon matriculation, Candidates receive a subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEPWEB). PEPWEB provides online access to all but the most recent issues of many leading psychoanalytic journals and some books, and includes the entire Standard Edition of Freud's collected works. PEPWEB also enables users to search the literature by author, topic, or key words. All reading lists are provided on the Center's website (Candidates must log in for access), and Candidates are expected to search for articles themselves through PEPWEB. Chapters from books and other readings not included in PEPWEB will be provided by the course instructor. (PEPWEB does not contain any articles newer than 3-4 years behind the current year.)

Referrals

The Center office maintains a list of our psychoanalysts who wish to have referrals from the membership at large or the general public.

Resource Groups

Resource groups are formed to offer a rich collegial and professional experience and do not function in an administrative or evaluative role. Each incoming class will be assigned Institute faculty members (a number equal to the class size) who will work with the class as a resource group during the first six years of training. The faculty members will be drawn from all levels of experience (recent graduates to training and supervising analysts) with consideration given to forming a compatible group. The members and candidates are expected to meet at least three times a year for a combined dinner/study group meeting. The dinners are generally held, in rotation, at the homes of candidates and members. These dinners may include case presentations, discussion of recent journal articles, presentations of writing-in-progress by participants, or a general review of training experiences.

Telephone Tree

Each instructor should organize a telephone tree at the first session of the class to facilitate communication with class members.
