Washington Center for Psychoanalysis

Neuroscience and Psychoanalytic Therapy is a two year program of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. The Center offers comprehensive training to professionals from a variety of disciplines. The program consists of 31 weekly sessions for each of two years.

During the two years students will learn the most current theories of brain function, develop a thorough understanding of functional organization of the brain and understand how it is relevant for psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. All courses are taught by a mix of experts with broad theoretic and practical backgrounds in Neuroscience and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. The course readings will be selected from the contemporary literature but will include historically relevant readings.

Our program is intended for experienced mental health practitioners who have graduate degrees in social work, psychology, psychiatry, counseling and psychiatric nursing. Its purpose is to provide participants with an opportunity to further their knowledge and understanding of neuroscience and to show how this understanding clearly enhances our ability to conduct psychotherapy. The program will also welcome non-clinical professionals interested in this subject matter.

Eligibility

Application for the class opens in the fall of 2008. Applicants will be assessed in terms of their prospective ability to master the work of the program. Primary consideration is given to practitioners who have graduate degrees in social work, psychology, psychiatry, counseling, and psychiatric nursing.

The Program invites applications from non-clinical professionals who wish to use this training to enrich their scientific, teaching, scholarly, or other special capabilities. We will work to adapt the program to their particular needs, skills, and interests.

Learning Objectives

  1. Students will gain knowledge in latest neuroscientific theories of brain function and its application to psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  2. Students will gain expertise in the application of neuroscientific and psychoanalytic theory to clinical practice.
